HABLAN (THEY SPEAK) by Leyla Selman: an Illuminated Lecture

An Illuminated Lecture on the translation of the play HABLAN by Leyla Selman, translated as THEY SPEAK by Catherine Boyle.

An illuminated lecture presents academic research in dialogue with creative work. Here, we will explore the processes of translating Chilean dramatist Leyla Selman’s HABLAN / THEY SPEAK. In the play two actresses prepare to perform Schiller’s Mary Stuart. The translation takes us from southern Chile to London, via Scotland. 

Directed by Sue Dunderdale, with dramaturg Karen Morash and with two actors, we will read  scenes from the play and enter into dialogue about the research, the traces of Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I that haunt the play, and the recreation of their voices for a contemporary audience.
